Unlike other veterinary problems pets develop, behaviour issues are often best observed in the comfort of the pet’s home or other familiar environments where they and their owners are most at ease. Behaviour issues displayed in a pet’s comfort zone can be captured by video, allowing our veterinarian to analyze the true behavioural concerns at hand.
In a clinic setting, animals may behave differently – they are often anxious and this can mask some of the underlying issues. For this reason, we routinely see patients via a virtual consultations over Zoom. We are currently not in a position to see clients in person.
Working with the pet’s primary care veterinarian and/or trainer is an important part of the process. Dr. Nicholson is available to work with pet owners, clinics, trainers, rescue groups and other individuals or groups who work with animals.

What are Behaviour Disorders
Many behavioural problems are anxiety based and therefore both a medical disease and an issue of animal welfare and quality of life. They require veterinary assessment and treatment to manage. This is in contrast to behaviours that are normal but socially undesirable such as digging, pulling on the leash and jumping up on people, which can generally be helped by qualified trainers who use positive, force free methods.
Our philosophy
We believe in an evidence based, force free approach. This means we use positive reinforcement and communication based behaviour modification (treatment) plans. Clear communication and play-based learning are the cornerstones of our philosophy. We focus on consent based care in a positive learning environment for both pet guardians and pets. We do this by setting clear, kind boundaries and supporting them with management while rewarding your pet for the appropriate behaviours.
